The 17 SDGs to be achieved by 2030 were designed to be a \u201c<em>blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all<\/em>\u201d while balancing the three dimensions of Sustainable development: <em><strong>economic<\/strong>, <strong>social <\/strong>and <strong>environmental<\/strong><\/em>. A lot of progress has been made towards achieving these goals and a lot of work is to be done. While these goals are designed to cover each and every aspect that could affect the lives of people around the world, including disasters, but the present scenario has raised questions \u2013 is the world prepared to deal with every challenge? Are SDGs designed to face pandemics?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/13.234.66.145\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/World-at-halt.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-145\" width=\"508\" height=\"284\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The outburst of COVID-19 has put the world at halt. The <strong><em>Pandemic <\/em><\/strong>has spread across more than 170 countries, and more than 100 countries have closed national borders. Even the most developed countries have failed to protect its people from this deadly virus and till date there is neither a full proof cure for this pandemic nor there is any vaccine to prevent it. People across the world are forced to stay inside their houses in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus. The ill-effects of this virus are not confined only to the health of people; it has rather disrupted the socio-economic balance at global level. This disruption would make it difficult for nations to meet the deadline (2030) for achieving these goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/13.234.66.145\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Docs-n-Masks.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-146\" width=\"555\" height=\"311\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>COVID-19 has created a new set of challenges for the world to\nface<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Disruption\nof global supply chains and international trade.<\/li><li>Sealing\nof national borders of over 100 countries<\/li><li>Movement\nof people and tourism flow has stopped<\/li><li>Shrinking\nof global economy<\/li><li>Scarcity\nof medical equipment and protection equipment in both developed and developing\ncountries for emergency situations<\/li><li>Decline\nin consumer spending in both developed and developing countries<\/li><li>Reduced\nimports from developing countries<\/li><li>Lockdowns\nand social distancing<\/li><li>Loss\nof jobs<\/li><li>Increased\ndomestic violence and crime against children<\/li><li>&nbsp;Increasing rate of spread of disease and\nincreasing mortality rate<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/13.234.66.145\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/covid-19-economy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-147\" width=\"542\" height=\"340\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA),\nthe Global Economy could shrink by 1% in 2020 and may contract even further if\nrestrictions on the economic activities continue without adequate fiscal\nresponses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Indian context<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/13.234.66.145\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/India-docs-covid.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-148\" width=\"486\" height=\"272\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Like all other developing countries, India too will face the consequences of the lock down.&nbsp; With offices, factories and tourism shut down, and disrupted trade and investment channels, India is likely to face a major economic crisis. The poor and vulnerable are having a tough time, especially the informal migrant workers who were forced to walk miles to reach their hometown as their daily earning stopped due to the sudden lock down and they did not have money for food and shelter. However, the Indian pharmaceutical sector would gain from the present situation due to increased demand of medicines from developed countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/13.234.66.145\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/migration.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-149\" width=\"467\" height=\"342\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges before India due to COVID 19<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Disruption\nof global supply chain and supply chain within India<\/li><li>Halt\nof international and domestic tourist flow<\/li><li>Sealing\nof national, state and district borders<\/li><li>Loss\nof jobs<\/li><li>scarcity\nof medical and personal protection equipment<\/li><li>Social\ndistancing<\/li><li>Food\ninsecurity among the poor and vulnerable<\/li><li>Increased\ndomestic violence and crime against children<\/li><li>Increasing\nrate of spread of disease and increasing mortality rate<\/li><li>Scarcity\nof medical staff<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SDGs related to the pandemic COVID -19<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"285\" height=\"177\" src=\"http:\/\/13.234.66.145\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/sdg-un.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-151\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The COVID -19 outbreak has raised an alarm to <strong>rethink SDGs<\/strong>.<\/em> <em>There are no targets related to spread of pandemics<\/em>, however some existing targets are designed for emergency situations and are therefore related to the impact of COVID-19. By 2030,\nend the epidemic of AIDS , tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases\nand combat hepatitis, water borne diseases&nbsp;\nand other&nbsp; communicable diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Target 3.8&nbsp;&nbsp; Achieve\nuniversal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to\nquality essential health-care services and access to&nbsp; safe, effective, quality and affordable\nessential medicines and vaccines for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Target 3.B&nbsp;&nbsp; Support\nthe research and development of vaccines and medicines for the communicable and\nnon- communicable diseases that primarily affect developing countries, provide\naccess to affordable essential medicines and vaccines in accordance with the\nDoha Declaration on TRIPS Agreement and Public Health, which affirms the right\nof developing countries to use to the full the provisions in the Agreement on\nTrade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights regarding flexibilities\nto protect public health , and, in particular, provide access&nbsp; to medicines for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Target 3.c&nbsp;&nbsp; Substantially\nincrease health financing and recruitment, development ,training and retention\nof the heath workforce in developing countries and least&nbsp; developed countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Target 3.d&nbsp;&nbsp; Strengthen\nthe capacity of all countries, in particular developing countries, for early\nwarning, risk reduction and management of national and global health risks<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#0b8d30\" class=\"has-text-color\"><strong><em>Area of focus: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Availability of medicines and vaccines , availability of equipment, availability of trained medical staff, safety of medical staff and people working for essential services.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/13.234.66.145\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/SDG8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-155\" srcset=\"http:\/\/13.234.66.145\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/SDG8.png 225w, http:\/\/13.234.66.145\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/SDG8-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-red-color\"><strong><em>SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Target 8.3&nbsp;&nbsp; Promote\ndevelopment-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job\ncreation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage the\nformalization and growth of micro-, small-, medium-sized enterprises, including\nthrough access to financial services<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Target 8.8&nbsp;&nbsp; Protect\nlabour rights and promote safe and secure working environments for all workers,\nincluding migrant workers, in particular women migrants, and those in\nprecarious employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-red-color\"><strong><em>Area of focus:&nbsp;&nbsp; Develop\nquality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, including regional\nand transborder infrastructure, to support economic development and human\nwell-being, with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Target 9.c&nbsp;&nbsp;\nSignificantly increase access to information and communication\ntechnology and strive to provide universal and affordable access to the internet\nin least developed countries by 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\"><strong><em>Area of focus:&nbsp;&nbsp; partnerships for the goals<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Target 17.8&nbsp;&nbsp; Fully\noperationalize the technology bank and science, technology and innovation\ncapacity building mechanism for least developed countries by 2017, and enhance\nuse of enabling technology, , in particular information and communications\ntechnology<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>17.13&nbsp;&nbsp; Enhance global\nmacroeconomic stability, including through policy coordination and policy\ncoherence<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#21078d\" class=\"has-text-color\"><strong><em>Area of focus:&nbsp; minimize losses to economies due to the Pandemic, technology assistance for treatment and protection of people.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">UN has been working to &#8211; minimize the spreading of COVID-19, provide relief to affected countries and their people and also to minimize damages caused by the Pandemic to global economy, but it needs to rethink SDG targets to protect the world from such pandemics in future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-red-color\"><em><strong>UN needs to set new SDG targets related to deadly pandemics keeping in mind<\/strong><\/em>, <strong><em>the following:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><em>Stop spreading of Pandemics<\/em><\/li><li><em>Sealing of national and international borders<\/em><\/li><li><em>Protection of people<\/em><\/li><li><em>Protection of medical staff<\/em><\/li><li><em>Protection of people involved in providing essential services<\/em><\/li><li><em>Availability of equipment<\/em><\/li><li><em>Availability of trained medical staff<\/em><\/li><li><em>Research on deadly viruses and treatment of diseases caused by them<\/em><\/li><li><em>Food security<\/em><\/li><li><em>Ensuring employment<\/em><\/li><li><em>Migrant workers<\/em><\/li><li><em>Stability of global economy<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Till now we have been talking about the effects of COVID-19, but in order to make sure that such pandemics do not occur in future, it is very important to study the origin of COVID-19. It is believed that the spread of this deadly virus was caused due to consumption of bats by humans. As per records, many pandemics in the past were also caused due to animals. The dangerous eating habits of some communities have led to these massive destruction. There is therefore a need to regulate such eating habits of people around the world. There is another theory of this virus being made in a lab during some research &#8211; if true, there should be a global body put in action, to regulate such dangerous researches- with or without the fear of them being used as a tool for bio-warfare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accountability should be affixed of the Pandemics caused, upon the relevant state. <br>Therefore &#8211; it is recommended &#8211; SDGs must also include targets for &#8211; <br>1. Identification and prohibition of consumption of animals that could lead to the outburst of such deadly virus. <br>2.
